Both the government of Canada and the government of Nova Scotia provide a variety of support for parents of young children. In Canada, employees and self-employed individuals who have been employed for one year with the same employer are entitled to parental leave benefits for a maximum of 50 weeks of leave. In addition, Child Benefits are paid to all Canadian parents with a provincial portion, Nova Scotia Child Benefit, paid based on the family’s annual earnings.
The cost of full time childcare is affordable when compared to other regions in the country. In Ontario, the average daily cost of childcare in a daycare for a preschool aged child is $41; in Alberta, $39; and in Nova Scotia, $31.
